Social Security Supplemental income or SSI treats a gift or giving money differently than someone paying your bills or in-kind support. A gift of money will be deducted from your SSI benefits dollar for dollar, except the first $20 which is disregarded. If the monthly gift is more than SSI monthly payment you will not be eligible for a payment for the month. In-kind support is when bills are paid for you directly. When a friend or relative pays your rent or bills directly you are receiving in-kind support. When someone pays your bills directly Social Security will deduct 1/3 of the SSI benefit rate.
